Things That Gave Us Life: The 'Girls Rule The World' Edition
WORDS: ASHLEY POAG
Our weekly roundup of the best things that happened online and IRL.
“Emotionally it seemed easier to stay away. There are some who say I should never go back. There are others who say I should’ve returned years ago. I understand both perspectives very well and wrestled with them for a long time. I’m just following my heart on this one.”
The world's number one women’s singles tennis champion Serena Williams wrote this about her return to Indian Wells this past week. Williams struggled through losses, jeering, and racial prejudice in 2001, leading her and sister, Venus Williams, to boycott the tournament. Now, 14 years later, Williams returned and dominated, calling the win "one of the biggest" in her life. The crowd gave a warm welcome at the start of the tournament, making her quite emotional. We’re glad Serena followed her heart.
As if we weren’t addicted enough, Vulture.com has discovered a new way to fuel our Cookie Lyon obsession. Taraji P. Henson’s Character from Empire now has her own paper doll complete with pieces from her on-screen wardrobe.
Nothing soothes a broken heart like a good music session. Grammy-nominated singer Jill Scott just provided us with the new “brown liquor drinking” track of the year. Her single “You Don’t Know" will have you reminiscing about all the ones that got away.
Although controversial, Alice Walker’s novel The Color Purple has stood the test of time. (We can’t name many friends that can’t quote at least one line from the movie adaptation.) This article from the New Reublic celebrates Walker's work and its cultural significance among black women.
A self-proclaimed bad girl is doing some really great things. Rihanna is set to be the voice of Gratuity “Tip” Tucci in the Dreamworks animated film Home. This will make her the first black lead in a 3D animated film. As if that isn’t enough, Tip is also a curly-haired natural girl.
It makes us smile to see Destiny’s Child original Kelly Rowland so happy. Rowland was featured on the April cover of Essence magazine alongside her husband Tim Weatherspoon and baby boy Titan Jewell. “I have been completely on a high getting to know my son Titan," she told the magazine. "I’m so in love!”
Baseball superstar Mo’Ne Davis continues to prove she is a girl on fire. The 13 year old now designs sneakers that benefit the Because I am a Girl initiative. Profits from sneaker sales will help promote gender equality by assisting girls living in poverty around the globe.
“My family says, 'Oh, you're such a man!' But I don't see why I shouldn't speak my mind.” Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, we’re hanging on to every word you say. British Vogue sat down with the Half of a Yellow Sun writer to discuss her amazing TED Talks, writing, and family life.
